The Airport Fire Appliances are provided by Hong Kong Airport Authority, and the Fire Services Department is responsible for providing the training fire officers to handle all firefighting and rescue in the airport.

The Airport Rescue & Fire fighting services commenced operation in 1948.  Air Traffic Control Office of the Civil Aviation Department (CAD) controlled the service unit. In 1954, a Divisional Fire Officer from HKFSD was taken over the duties of Air Traffic Control Office. He was directly responsible to the director of CAD.

After the reorganization, two fire officers and 49 junior firefighters was joined the structure of Airport Rescue & Fire fighting services.

It was later integrated with the HKFSD in 1962 and was renamed Airport Fire Contingent. Under the law on that time, the Director of CAD for operational control but the Director of HKFSD was responsible for its administration and discipline.

However, there were no enough firefighters to handle the airport fire and rescue service, so the HKFSD sent 6 contingent members to posted in various fire stations for 6 months for operational domestic firefighting training.

In the same time, local fire stations were posted the same number of members to go to the Airport Fire Contingent for a six months training. In addition, 4 officers of the Kowloon Command were posted to the Airport for a one-month training about the Airport Fighting.

Today, the Hong Kong International Airport moved to Chek Lap Kok from Kai Tak. It is now under management of the Hong Kong Airport Authority and responsible for operational control. There is a one of the largest fire simulators in the world which built in the Airport cross area.

From 1 April 2000, the Hong Kong SAR Government has taken over the funding responsibilities of the Airport Fire Contingent.

Only officers of ADO rank who possess Certificates of Competency obtained from the Civil Aviation Authority Fire Services Training School in the UK will be considered for the posting to the Airport Fire Contingent. As the other rank, they must have fire years domestic firefighting experiences before being considered.

Today, the Airport Fire Contingent is a one of the famous airport firefighting unit in the world.

 

The Fire Services Fire Applications:

Rapid Intervention Vehicle

The Rapid Intervention Vehicle contains water, foam, Co.2...etc

It also increase the speed to 80 km/h from 0 km/h in 25 seconds. The roof monitor can throw up to 90m.



Rosenbauer

The Rosenbauer contains 14300 water, 1700 foam.

It has the hose reels holding 30m of non-collapsible rubber hose with foam pipe, the roof monitor  can throw up to 80m.

It also increase the speed to 80km/h from 0km/h in 25 seconds. The max. speed  is 140 km/h.


Hose / Foam Carrier

Hose / Foam Carrier appliances serving at airport.

It carries 1 km of 70mm firefighting hose and 3400 liters of foam concentrate.


Jackless Snorkel

It is different from other Snorkel which action in urban area since it can work and use its platform without jack.


Command Boat

For the safety of aircraft may have a accident over the sea, so the Airport Authority in Hong Kong is required to provide a sea rescue service which covers the ocean up to 5 km from the ends of each runway.

Two command boats can maintain a rescue operations during No. 8 Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal conditions.

The command boats can act as a command boats as a command centre or a temporary medical treatment centre, it also can search and rescue underwater.

t can be able to rescue about 600 peoples. In addition, there are 8 speedboats which provided at the airport. The two commend boats have an underwater camera, rescue boats have an underwater camera, rescue baskets, helicopter winching platform, a hydraulically-operated 360 degree telescopic light and infrared night vision system an auxiliary boat.
