A Government Flying Service (GFS) helicopter crashed on a hillside near Tung Chung on Lantau on August 26, 2003.

The helicopter left the GFS base in Chek Lap Kok at about 10.30 pm for Cheung Chau to airlift a casualty to hospital. After the last contract from the control room, the helicopter failed to respond when being contacted by the Headquarters at Chek Lap Kok at 10.41 pm.

The Civil Aviation Department and GFS have used sereral methods to contract the helicoper, but failed. So the Civil Aviation Department ran the Contingency Plan for Dealing with An Aircraft Crash and conducted the search & rescue operation. Fire Services Department, Police Force, Marine Department and Civil Aid Service were taken part in the operation.

0018 hours, The body of the GFS helicopter was located by the firemen at about 300 metres near Fung Wong Path, Fung Wong Shan in Lantau.

0043, The pilot and crewman were found trapped inside the wrecked body of the helicopter. They needed to release by heavy rescue tools.

But unlickily, the pilot and crewman were certified dead on arrival at around 4 am.

This was the Service's first fatal accident since its establishment in 1993.
